Crystals from the region in and around Herkimer, NY are known as Herkimer diamonds. While they are quartz crystals and not diamonds at all, their double terminated formations along with a brilliant luster are reminiscent of diamonds. Herkimer diamonds are slightly harder than most quartz varieties with hardness of 7.5 – 8 Mohs while quartz is 7. Herkimer’s have brilliant clarity, but will sometimes have crackled interior that throws off beautiful rainbows. Some have carbon inclusions, and on rare occasions you can find an enhydro bubble!
