As legend goes, these stones were formed after the American cavalry chased Apache warriors to their death. The Apache women's tears of grief turned into these dark stones as they dropped on the sand. Apache Tears are actually a form of volcanic glass and are in the obsidian family. They are usually very dark brown to black and polished to a glassy finish. These apache tears are completely unpolished, pockmarked with some quartz or matrix, but they are generally smooth to the touch. Hold them up to the light and you’ll see they are deep translucent brown. They have a profound grounding energy, much deeper than black obsidian, yet they don't bog you down. They help you to appreciate all that Earth energies have to offer and realize that spirit is all around us. They have a soothing energy working to release locked emotions and are good used to overcome grief or extreme shock or trauma. They lend strength and stamina and gently boost your vital energy. These stones are usually found in the Southwestern states of the US and Mexico.

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that is created when lava flows are quickly cooled with water. Obsidian is comprised mostly of silicon dioxide but its amorphous formation lacks the crystalline structure of quartz and is therefore generally softer. This beautiful mineral is perfect for carving and polishing and has long been used in ceremonies and cleaved into weapons.
