Chalcedony is a crypto-crystalline variety of quartz, meaning that the individual crystals are too small to see without magnification.  Agates are also a member of the crypto-crystalline quartz variety, a close sister to chalcedony.  This particular piece of chalcedony is from Poona, India and has translucent creamy bands of white and grey.  In the center of the piece, a bed of sparkling tiny druzy crystals draw your eye.  This bed would make a wonderful resting place for a small gem.
