Crystals from the region in and around Herkimer, NY are known as Herkimer diamonds. While they are quartz crystals and not diamonds at all, their double terminated formations along with a brilliant luster are reminiscent of diamonds. Herkimer diamonds are slightly harder than most quartz varieties with hardness of 7.5 – 8 Mohs while quartz is 7.
